Reunion

By Peter

I just attended my 30th high school reunion. There were lots of people from my elementary school there, which went from kindergarten through eighth grade. We talked about the second grade teacher who could make anything out of paper mache, the mad-science teacher, the terrifying but talented math teacher, and the captivating English teacher who went on the $10,000 Pyramid game show and won.

At the end of the evening, this is what jumped out at me about this elementary school group: we truly liked each other. I would spot someone in the room, and I would immediately know who it was, and all those feelings of affection would come back in a rush. There were several forces at play to separate us: some of us were Jewish, others were Catholic; some of us were middle class, others were working class. We could tell the difference, but it didn’t stop us from liking each other. As I look back, even the toughest kids would show signs of warmth and friendship when I did not expect it.

Back then, I could tell I liked people, but I often could not tell I was liked. I was shy, I rarely found the words to say anything, and I was sure people took it the wrong way. I found schoolwork easy, and I was sure people resented me for it. I was quiet and felt invisible, and I was sure no one would remember me. But at the reunion, people recognized me at once, and they seemed as delighted to see me as I was to see them. My old feelings were simply wrong.

This aspect of my personality shows up in Joshua, my main character, and Amanda is capturing it so beautifully. Joshua finds himself in a place where everyone is different from him, and the idea that its inhabitants would like him and want to be friends with him seems inconceivable. He is distrustful and disbelieving of their attraction to him. It will take a long time for him to change his mind, but hopefully not as long as it took me.

Shankar

By Peter

Early on in thinking about the story of Coiled, I wanted to have a guide to the virtual world to help Joshua and his friends. Since the world of Space Station Tesla is completely virtual, it occurred to me that he could be from anywhere. My first thought was Australia, and I imagined someone like the Crocodile Hunter. But then I thought about how India has become such a software powerhouse, and that seemed more appropriate.

Thinking about India got me thinking about my friend, Shankar Venkatagiri, who is a professor in Bangalore. I met Shankar when we were both working at a start-up in Cambridge, Massachusetts. This was during the dot-com boom, and, like many start-ups, the company was often a scene of very smart people working in an environment of chaos.

One of my favorite things about Shankar was that he was unflappable, and remained calm and cheerful no matter what nonsense was happening around him. My fictional Shankar is not exactly like the real thing, but I took that quality and brought it into my virtual world, where everything has an air of absurdity around it. Fortunately, the real Shankar was kind enough to let me use his name and likeness.

Shankar and the General

By Peter

Chapter 3 brings us back to the virtual world and introduces two of my favorite characters: General Shay and Shankar Venkatagiri. One of the things I love to do is to write dialog for people who use the English language completely differently. The General’s style is clipped and crisp. Shankar’s style is fluid and sometimes academic.

I get a kick out of little things, like the fact that the General calls everyone by their last name to be clipped and crisp, but Shankar’s unwieldy last name causes the exact opposite effect.  It also amuses me that for reasons beyond his control, the only tools available to the General to accomplish his current goal is silverware.

There really is a real-life Shankar Venkatagiri. I’ll tell you more about him next week.

Filler Page

By Peter

We’re doing a filler page this week between chapters 2 and 3. Chapter 3 introduces two new characters, and we wanted to take our time and get them right. Thanks for your patience.

Here are some early sketches of Ayana, the Somali girl who is living where Joshua’s mother used to live. You’ll see more of her in Chapter 4. In these early sketches, the headscarf isn’t quite right, since it’s not covering her neck. Mostly, we were trying to decide on the shape of her face.

By the way, how many of you put “Edison reneged” into Google last week to see what would happen?

Why No Comments?

By Peter

Typically webcomics have a comments section, like any other blog. In fact, ComicPress, which is the WordPress variation that we are using, has a comments section built into it. I had to work hard to figure out how to take it out.

Why not let our readers comment? In this new world of content on the Web, isn’t community feedback important? Well, yes, it is, but there’s something even more important. The creative mind is fragile. It doesn’t take much criticism to derail it, and it’s just too easy for some anonymous person to post a criticism, deserved or not. Writers have been writing for centuries without public feedback until they are finished. This is how nearly all of the great works were created.

You can still contact us. You just need to go to the About tab and send us an email. It takes a little more effort, and your comments won’t be public, but we’ll still be happy to hear from you.

By the way, this ends chapter 2! Chapter 3 takes us back to the virtual world, and you’ll meet some of its other inhabitants.
