Getting the Word Out

By Peter

I feel like we finally have enough pages that we can start seriously getting the word out about Coiled. It’s been interesting to watch my publicity attempts create a spike of interest, but settle down to just above where it started. I know not everyone can read a story one page a week, but that’s the fastest we can realistically produce them. However, I know there are lots of successful webcomics that only publish a page a week.

I could set up an automatic mailing list that notifies you when a chapter is done so you could read a chapter a month instead of a page a day. Let me know if you have other ideas. (Or any ideas as to how we can get the word out.) That’s what the new comment section is for!

Comments!

By Peter

For several months now, Amanda has been requesting that I put the ability for readers to comment back on the site. I had taken them out (see my reasons here), and with my limited PHP ability, I could not figure out how to get them back in. We use a WordPress theme called ComicPress, and it turns out that we were overdue for a version upgrade. So I made the upgrade and then had to put in all the settings again (except the code that took out the comments). I got it pretty close to where it was before, although there are some minor differences.

Anyway, comments are back, so use them! Ask us anything. Give us feedback. In fact, let’s start a discussion right now. How many of you assumed that the woman in the very first scene was Joshua’s mom, and now know that you were mistaken? (In fact, now that you know what Joshua’s mom looks like, you may be wondering who that first woman is. She’ll come back in the story eventually.)

Write those comments!

Teapot

By Peter

Of all the objects Joshua’s mom could have shown him, why a teapot? The answer is that in the early days of computer 3D graphics, a teapot known as the Utah Teapot was always used to showcase how realistically a 3D graphics system could display an object. (According to Wikipedia, the teapot shape contains a number of elements that made it ideal for the graphics experiments of the time.) I worked on some early Virtual Reality systems at Boeing in the 1990s, and when I went to graphics conferences, images of teapots were everywhere.

In Coiled, someone has chosen the teapot image to show that this device is the ultimate graphics system. The teapot is constructed in the mind, and no 3D graphics system can compete with it.

In the Central District News

By Peter

Tom Fucoloro from the Central District News interviewed me last week, and did a little write-up in the blog. Check it out here: http://www.centraldistrictnews.com/2011/05/31/former-yesler-terrace-computer-lab-teacher-creates-web-comic-set-in-the-neighborhood

Another report he did recently talked about how Yesler Terrace as we know it (and as it is portrayed in Coiled) will not be around that much longer. The city knows it can get a high price selling space so close to downtown to developers, so it plans to replace Yesler’s townhouses with taller buildings to increase the density. They say that the amount of low-income housing will stay the same. But Yesler residents will lose their small yards, and the historic houses (more later on why they are historic) will be taken down. You can read more about it here: http://www.centraldistrictnews.com/2011/05/20/housing-authority-approves-yesler-terrace-redevelopment

We Are Interviewed for TGT Webcomics Podcast

By Peter

TGT Webcomics (stands for “Two Guys Talking”) is a website that interviews webcomic artists twice a week. We were their 168th show, and I hadn’t expected to be able to last the hour long segment that Kurt Sasso wanted from us, but in the end, the time passed quickly. Kurt asked us about the plot of the comic, how we got started drawing and writing, and how we are going to publicize our work.

Check it out at: http://tgtwebcomics.com/podcast/ep168-coiledcomics/
